Bonnie Prince Charlie' monument at Glenfinnan on the road to the isles

The Glenfinnan Monument

Herein lies the very tabernacle of the Bonny Prince Charlie culture, for it was at Loch Shiel, just where the monument now stands, that he first raised his standard on August 19th, 1745, at the outset of the ill-fated Jacobite Rebellion. The monument was built in 1815 by MacDonald of Glenaladale and is now in the hands of the National Trust for Scotland, who have an attractive visitor centre there.
